PUYE CLIFFS, BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT AND VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE
Take a wonderful trip by starting a guided tour at Puye Cliff Dwellings, then make a short drive to Bandelier National Monument.
A must see, only 40 miles from Santa Fe. An Open Book of Human History, Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities. At Bandelier, you can follow the main loop to see the cliff dwellings. If you schedule permits, then walk to the Cove. It is worth the extra time. Then take a drive on the National Scenic Byway to Valles Caldera National Preserve. Come back to Santa Fe for a nice dinner in town.
