HIGH ROAD TO TAOS ("take the high road")
One of the best way to see the diversity of New Mexico landscape is to take the High Road to Taos. You will be driving through charming little villages, badlands, lush green valleys and Kit Carson National Forest. On your way, and in Taos, there are several natural stops. Here are a few:
- Santuario de Chimayo - A beautiful santuary in Chimayo River valley (Georgia O'Keeffe painted this sanctuary, and her friend Ansel Adam took pictures)
- Taos Pueblo - Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years.
- Millicent Rogers Museum - This impressive museum has more than a dozen galleries with some 5000 pieces of Native American and Hispanic art, including furniture, weaving, paintings, pottery and a celebrated collection of Native American jewelry.
- Rio Grande Gorge and Bridge - just a short drive outside of Taos, this bridge and the gorge is worth the trip.
There are many talented artists who make this area home. Please visit www.HighRoadNewMexico.com for additional information. Here is what they say, "The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway is a lovely, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Santa Fe and Taos. It offers magnificent vistas of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and charming traditional Spanish and Pueblo villages. This lovely scenery has inspired many artists and artisans who live along the High Road. We welcome you to come, explore, and help sustain the rural economy of this charming, centuries-old region."
Coming back to Santa Fe, you can take the quicker New Mexico Highway 68 along the Rio Grande River.
